NBR Scooter Brokers was started in 2002, when Nigel Rosenfeld decided to set up as a sole trader selling mobility scooters from an industrial unit, next to his then home in Bunwell. Although the unit was where he was based, Nigel spent most of the time taking products to customers at their homes as he was aware that a lot of people were unable to travel. To begin with, Nigel would attend the market days held in Fakenham and Sheringham before taking on both Hunstanton and Beccles markets too. Whilst the initial plan was to just focus on mobility scooters, the increasing number of requests from customers for other disability aids led Nigel to take the decision to expand the product lineup. This included, amongst other things, powerchairs, rise and recline chairs and adjustable beds. In 2006, Nigel was able to supply stairlifts after he partnered with Brooks, a decision that was made to help a number of customers who wanted to retain the use of their homes when the stairs started to become a safety concern.
The markets continued to play a role in the business until early 2007, when the number of customers that had come to rely on Nigel meant there simply wasn’t the time available to continue them. From that point on the business continued to grow based purely on recommendations from the many existing, happy customers he had. In 2008, as Nigel had already taken on a full-time member of staff, he wanted to look after the installations of the stairlifts in house. This meant that customers were able to get a solution in place much quicker than before, as they weren’t reliant on the installation appointments available from Brookes. It was in April 2010 when the business had grown so much it made sense to become a limited company.
Fast forward six years later to April 2016 and the decision was made to open a full retail outlet and workshop in Diss. Located on Victoria Road, the main road into town, NBR quickly started to attract new customers, which helped to secure the existing great reputation in the local area. With the workshop facility, it made sense to move into the supply and fitting of vehicle adaptations, which is what happened in the third quarter of 2016. From the more straight forward steering balls to full hand controls and hoists, NBR was able to offer the same service they had become known for to a new set of customers. After just 18 months of fitting adaptations, approval was given by Motability to offer many of the solutions on their scheme. With many local car dealerships now using NBR for their Motability requirements, it reached the point where a 2nd location was needed.
In September of 2018, the new showroom and workshop opened in Stowmarket, offering the same range of products and services as the Diss location. The opening has been received very well locally, and the store continues to provide an increasing rate of satisfied customers as the weeks go by. Most recently, Motability has approved NBR to supply mobility scooters and powerchairs on the scheme too. The scheme gives those who are eligible worry-free mobility, with a low weekly payment covering everything that is needed, from servicing to breakdown cover and insurance.
Although the business has changed completely since it was started in 2002, Nigel has ensured that the core values he had in the very beginning remained. “The importance of treating others as you would like to be treated yourself is central to every interaction we have with a customer,” he said. He believes that transparency and integrity are essential to maintaining a long lasting relationship with customers, and he continues to play a very active customer facing role in the company.
